Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary

Situated at an elevation range of 1500 to 2600m above sea level with over 38 sq km of land, the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the smallest wildlife sanctuaries of North Bengal. The sanctuary is well known among bird lovers and houses around 192 species of birds. Black-throated Sunbird, Lemon-rumped Warbler, Orange-bellied Leafbird, Black-faced Laughing thrush, White-throated Laughing thrush, Long-tailed Minivet, Dark-sided Flycatcher, Scarlet Minivet and Golden-breasted Fulvetta are some of the most sighted bird species of this region.

Singalila National Park

Located in the Indo-Nepal border Singalila National Park is the highest national park of West Bengal and is widely popular for its birding opportunities. With an elevation of 3650m, the national park is home to more than 300 species of Himalayan species found in the northern part of this region. Some of the popular bird species of this national park include Blue-fronted Robin, Great Parrotbill, Scarlet Finch, Gold-naped Finch, Darjeeling Woodpecker, Rufous-bellied Woodpecker, Blood Pheasant, Rufous Throated Wren Babbler and many others. Although the national park is open throughout the year, summer is considered to be the best time to see these birds.

Neora Valley National Park

Placed on the eastern side of the Darjeeling district, Neora Valley National Park is known for its rich wildlife diversity attracting nature lovers and bird lovers. Apart from wild animals, the park is known to inhabit more than 300 species of birds some of which have migrated from nearby regions of Sikkim. Redstart, Whistling Thrush, Golden Headed Black Finch, Minivets, Flycatchers, Orioles, Parakeets, Sunbirds, Swallows and Woodpeckers are some of the popular bird species of this region.

Lepchajagat

Lepchajagat, a quaint hamlet nestled amidst the verdant hills of Darjeeling, is more than just a place of stunning scenery and tranquil escapes. The place is a hidden gem for bird lovers that offers a great biding experience. Considered one of the serene places of the region, Lepchajagat is home to numerous native as well as migrating bird species. Fire-Tailed Sunbird and the Rufous Sibia are the most popular birds found in this region that can be sighted throughout the year. Although summers are considered to be the best season to indulge.

Sukhiapokhri

Surrounded by lush rhododendron forest and alpine vegetation, Sukhiapokhri is home to rare and endangered bird species popular among bird lovers. Situated with an elevation of 2,194 m, the village is home to numerous species of birds. Rufous-bellied Woodpecker and Slaty-headed Parakeet are the major highlights of this region. The month of March to June is considered to be the best season for birding experience although some birds also migrate during winters.

Latpanchar

A serene village located on quaint hills of eastern Darjeeling, Latpanchar has been able to gain popularity with numerous natural adventures and rich wildlife. However, in recent times the village has been able to witness numerous species of Himalayan birds which have been a major attraction among nature lovers. Rufous-necked hornbill, Scarlet Minivet, Rufous Sibia, Fulvous Parrotbill, Blue-throated Barbet and Black Bulbul are the most common bird species found in this region. Besides this, many other bird species can be found in this region based on season and weather conditions.

Padmaja Naidu Zoological Park

Spread across 67 acres of land, Padmaja Naidu Zoological Park is considered to be one of the finest zoological parks in the country. The park is home to a conservation breeding centre for red pandas that are considered one of the biggest in the country.

Downhill Kurseong

Popular for its rich wildlife and historic tales, the northern part of Dowhill falls under the Singalila National Park and therefore is home to numerous animal species including the red panda.

Neora Valley National Park

Situated in the middle of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts, Neora Valley National Park is one of the largest national parks in the region. Singalila National Park

Singalila National Park is situated in the northern part of Darjeeling with elevation ranging from 5000 ft to 12000ft. Sandakphu

Placed on the Singalila range, Sandakphu is the highest peak in West Bengal and a dream destination among every trekking enthusiast. Chatakpur

Tonglu

Lachung

Placed in the northern part of Sikkim, Lachung is one of the favourite tourist destinations popular for its natural beauty and pristine lakes. Being located at an altitude of 2,900m the valley is home to rare and endangered bird species that cannot be found elsewhere. Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary

Surrounded by lush Oak and Rhododendron forests, Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the prominent places to see Himalayan bird species. Being located at an elevation of 2500m above sea level, the wildlife sanctuary is home to approximately 220 bird species. Green Shrike-Babbler, Red-faced Liocichla, Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler, Russet Sparrow, Black Redstart, Nepal Fulvetta and Scaly Laughing thrush are some of the popular bids of the region.

Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary

Situated on the western part of Sikkim adjoining Singalila Range, the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary is a paradise for bird lovers. Steeped with verdant hills and vibrant rhododendron forest, the sanctuary is home to a wide number of bird species that can be sighted from various parts of the region. Some of the bird species of this region are Black-throated Parrotbill, Striated Laughing thrush, Red-vented Bulbul, Golden-breasted Fulvetta, Gray-hooded Warbler, Indian White-eye, Yellow-cheeked Tit and many others.

Fambong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary

With a distance of 40 km from the capital city of Gangtok, Fambong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary offers the breathtaking beauty of the surrounding hills. Along with that, the sanctuary is also considered one of the best places for bird watching. Chestnut Crowned Laughing thrush, Ashy Drongo, Gray-sided Laughing thrush, Black-faced Warbler, Black-throated Tit, Golden-breasted Fulvetta, Rufous Sibia, Rufous-winged Fulvetta and Blyth's Swift are some of the bird species that have been sighted in this wildlife sanctuary. Being located in the heart of Sikkim, the place can be easily travelled allowing the best sight of the Himalayan birds at any time of the year.

Kanchenjunga National Park

Spread across 850 sq km of land, the Kanchenjunga National Park is home to diverse flora and fauna that make it stand as one of the best national parks of Northeastern India. Although summers are known to be the best time to visit to experience birding, during winters the place welcomes the Himalayan species that are rare and hardly found in other areas. Some of the popular bird species of this national park are Snow Pigeon, Yellow-billed Chough, Alpine Accentor, Russet Sparrow and Rufous-bellied Niltava.

The national park is also home to nocturnal bird species that can be sighted with night safari.

Kitam Bird Sanctuary

Placed in the southern valleys of Sikkim beside the Rangeet River, Kitam Bird Sanctuary is considered among the best places to witness the true charm of nature. Besides natural beauty, the place is also famous for inhabiting a wide variety of bird species. Barred Cuckoo-Dove, Red Jungle fowl, Frutescent Prinia, Lesser Necklaced Laughing thrush, Green-backed Tit, Whistler's Warbler, White-rumped Munia, Common Iora, Indian Peafowl and Nepal House-Martin. Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary

Located on the iconic old Silk Route, the Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary is a popular destination among adventure seekers and travel enthusiasts. However, the sanctuary is also home to more than 200 bird species that can be sighted in various parts of this sanctuary. With an altitude range of 1,760 to 4,390 m, the region is home to native as well as Himalayan bird species. Some of the beautiful birds that can be sighted in this region are the Blood Pheasant, Satyr Tragopan, Kalij Pheasant, Hill Partridge, Himalayan Monal, Great Parrotbill, Fulvous Parrotbill, Himalayan Owl, Himalayan Shortwing, Lesser Shortwing and many others.

Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary

Placed at an altitude of 2000m, the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary is home to a vast variety of rhododendron forests and offers a panoramic view of the snow-capped mountains. Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in the eastern part of Sikkim, the Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary offers stunning mountain views with is home to rich flora and fauna. With an incredible altitude of over 3,600m the sanctuary is home to various wild animals such as Red Panda and Snow Leopard along with a diverse variety of bird species attracting nature lovers and birdwatchers in huge numbers. According to the survey conducted by WWF, the eastern part of Sikkim is home to more than 20-25 red pandas that are highest in the state.

Kanchenjunga National Park

Kanchenjunga National Park is situated in the northern part of Sikkim with an elevation range of 1829m to 8550, which makes it a natural habitat for various Himalayan birds and animals. Apart from mountain views and rich flora, the national park is home to an extinct Himalayan species red panda which has made it a popular attraction site in the state. Steeped with misty hills and rich bamboo vegetation, the national park is home to the largest population of red panda in the state.

Yumthang Valley

Although Yumthang is called as Valley of Flowers, the valley is also known for inhabiting rare and endangered Himalayan animal and bird species. This includes Red Panda, Snow Leopard and many others. The valley is filled with off-road trails and the Rocky Mountains, therefore visitors need to trek through the lush green valleys to sight these animals in their natural habitat. Birding Hotspots in Darjeeling

Gorumara National Park

Established as a national park in the year 1994, Gorumara National Park is home to the largest popular Indian rhinoceros in this region along with animal species. The park is surrounded by diverse landscapes and is home to more than 190 species of birds.  Scarlet Minivet, Sunbird, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Spangled Drongo and Great Indian Hornbill, woodpeckers, pheasants and Peafowl are very common bird species in this region. Most of them are submontane birds and can be easily sighted in this region during the daytime.

Jaldapara National Park

Jaldapara is one of the prominent names when it comes to safari and bird watching in Dooars. Spread across 216 sq km of land, the national park has an expansive collection of bird species such as Green Pigeons, Hornbills, Parakeets, Barbets, Woodpeckers, Orioles, Drongos, Babblers, Cuckoos, Thrushes whistling teals and Goosanders. Summer and winter are the best times to witness these birds. The park is also home to numerous nocturnal birds that can be sighted with night safari.

Buxa Tiger Reserve

Located on the foothills of the eastern Himalayas adjacent to the Indo-Bhutan border, the Buxa Tiger Reserve is one of the best places to immerse in a birding experience. Having close proximity to the Jaldapara National Park, the region is home to over 235 species of birds making it a paradise for bird lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Trekking Trails in Darjeeling

Lepchaka Village

Perched on the hilltop of Buxa Tiger Reserve, Lepchaka is a small village that boasts its beauty with rich wildlife and authentic village lifestyle. However, the village is also a popular destination for trekkers. Situated on the Indo-Bhutan border, visitors need to trek through the inclined hills and cross multiple rivers before reaching the top of the village offering an adrenaline-rushing experience.

Jayanti

The picturesque village located in the eastern part of Alipurduar district is another popular spot to indulge in trekking adventures. Mahakal Baba Mandir located on top of the mountain is the most popular destination that offers trekking adventures starting from Jayanti. The mountain is filled with wild animals therefore it is necessary to seek help from local guides.

Buxa Fort

Once used to be used as the detainment centre for the Indian prisoners, the fort is one of the popular attractions of Dooars. However, there are no roads connecting to the fort and people need to go on a 3-hour trek for reaching to top of the fort. The fort also connects to the Lepchaka village and is basically used as the exit route for trekkers of Lepchaka Village.

Bhutanghat

As the name suggests Bhutanghat is a beautiful mountain situated in the Indo-Nepal border that is widely popular among trekking enthusiasts. Visitors are not allowed to stay in these mountains therefore the trek is a one-day journey that offers great experiences and is sure to challenge your physical abilities.

Assam

Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga National Park is considered one of the popular national parks of the country which is home to the largest population of one-horned rhinoceros. However, the national park being surrounded by pleasant weather and dense forest area is a natural habitat for numerous bird species making it a perfect place to immerse in a birding adventure. The national park is home to around 419 species of birds some of which are Lesser Whistling-Duck, Eurasian Coot, Gray Heron, Bar-headed Goose, Graylag Goose, Asian Green Bee-eater, Yellow-footed Green-Pigeon, Indian Pied Starling and many others.

Orang National Park

Situated on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra River, the Orang National Park is one of the oldest national parks in the state. Although the national park is well known for one-horned rhinoceros and tigers, the park is home to around 300 species of birds. Summer and early winters are considered to be the best time for birding while in the monsoons it is difficult to sight these bird species. Some of the popular birds of this region are Lesser Whistling-Duck, Gadwall, Green-winged Teal, Ruddy Shelduck, Chestnut-tailed Starling, Garganey, Northern Pintail, Barn Swallow and Red-vented Bulbul.

Dibru-Saikhowa National Park

Considered one of the largest national parks of Assam, the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park is a paradise for bird lovers. Surrounded by rich forest areas and wet grasslands the national houses more than 500 species of birds some of which the limited to the region. Some of the most sighted bird species of this region include Great Cormorant, Citrine Wagtail, Black-faced Bunting, Little Cormorant, Ferruginous Duck, Barn Swallow, Common Myna, Eastern Yellow Wagtail, Bar-headed Goose and many others.

Manas National Park

Manas National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Assam, known as a popular destination for birding. The park's diverse habitats, including grasslands, woodlands, wetlands, and rivers, provide ideal nesting grounds for over 450 variety of birds. Some of the popular birds are Eastern Cattle Egret, Barn Swallow, Small Pratincole, Red-breasted Parakeet, Black Drongo, Black Bulbul, Chestnut-tailed Starling, Common Myna, Baya Weaver, Spot-winged Starling, Long-tailed Broadbill and Gray-throated Martin.

Arunachal Pradesh

Namdapha National Park

Namdapha National Park located in the easternmost part of India is one of the most popular national parks known for offering a unique birding experience. Eagle's Nest Wildlife Sanctuary

Mishmi Hills

Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary

Placed amidst rugged mountain belts of Arunachal Pradesh, the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary is home to more than 380 species of birds. Tura Peak

Tura Peak's diverse habitat of the Eastern Himalayas is a major hotspot for birding adventures.
